She told me that one of my ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence back in 1776. I was so inspired by this memory that I started searching online for anything I could get my hands on. I discovered that not only was my ancestor, John Morton, a signer, but he also cast the deciding vote for the Pennsylvania delegation to approve the proclamation. Pennsylvania is called ‘The Keystone State’ to this day because of that! This makes John Morton one of the most influential delegates.
How cool is that? What’s even better is that most people can find some kind of jaw-dropping, uber-cool information in their family’s history. But, I think we’re forgetting, or at least neglecting, to pass along these key facts.
Facts, personalities, and important historical and personal events are getting lost in the shuffle because very few take time to document them.
We shouldn’t only pay attention to influential historical figures, either. Would you love to know what your great-grandmother’s most vivid memory of her childhood was? How interesting would it be for you to know which chores she despised and what happened to her first love?
